CIE CHARA

Cie Chara is a Moroccan-German dance company based in Casablanca, founded in 2022 by Yassine „Yoriyas“ Alaoui Ismaili and Friederike „Frieda“ Frost with the vision of creating dance theatre pieces with local dancers, inspired by moroccan culture, everyday life and urban dance.

The creations of Cie Chara are a „window“ to moroccan culture and codes, far from orientalist phantasies or colonialist views, that the audience is invited to discover.

Each creation tells through a unique, urban, and artistic approach the inspirations, observations and personal experiences in Morocco, of tradition and modernity, cultural heritage and today’s happenings, combined with the uniqueness of the dancers and choreographers.

The first creation HIT 7AYT  حايط حيث (because of the wall) (2022-2023) is inspired by the city Casablanca, the private and public space – seperated by walls -, its inhabitants and movements of daily life. It is coproduced by Schouwburg Kortrijk (Belgium) and was premiered at the Tanz NRW Festival 2023 (Germany).

The creation SELAM (2023) is a short piece that brings the city of Casablanca into the public space, combining the participatory and entertaining elements of urban dance with Moroccan culture and the intimate atmosphere of dance theater.

The new creation atlas (2023-ongoing) explores the concept of calm, the place of spirituality, human and animal bodies and movements. It is inspired by the Atlas region in Morocco.
